Ashtray, Match, and Cigarette Holder
Pilipusi Novalinga did not receive the “star” treatment accorded his older brother, Akeeaktashuk, in the early 1950s. Novalinga’s more quirky carvings, which mostly depict human figures, are modestly sized and seem quite delicate. Their sensitively proportioned facial features usually convey “surprised” expressions, amplified by frequent use of beads for eyes. While stone functional objects were promoted as souvenirs at the time, the artist’s addition of the small human head elevates his “container” to the level of art.
