Inuit Hunter with Caribou and Dog
A founding member and first president of the Povungnituk Co-operative Society in the early 1960s, Charlie Sivuarapik was arguably the most skilled and certainly the most acclaimed Puvirnituq sculptor of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Sivuarapik’s highly naturalistic, carefully detailed, and beautifully finished stone carvings set the standard for quality in the community. He was also a gifted ivory carver. In 1960, he was the first Inuk elected to the Sculptors Society of Canada. Sivuarapik’s great gift was his ability to present human and especially animal subjects not just with lifelike realism but also with true sensitivity and intimate knowledge of animal behaviour.
