Qirgnirq, Jessie

(b. ?)

Jessie Qirgnirq (b. 1942) is sometimes also identified as Jessie Kernerk or Bessie Kernerk. She lived in Gjoa Haven, NU and her artistic practice involved both stone sculpting and sewing wall hangings. Between 1979 and 1980, her sculptures and wall hangings were featured in group exhibitions of Gjoa Haven artists at the Snow Goose Gallery in Ottawa, ON, the Park Gallery in Vancouver, BC, and the Canadiana Galleries in Edmonton, AB. One of her carvings can be found in the collection of the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Although most contemporary carvers in her area would have been using local stone at the time, Qirgnirq was one of few carvers to access white stone from a shipment that was imported from British Columbia in 1978.
