Kudluk, Thomassie

(1910–1989)

Thomassie Kudluk was an artist based in Kangiqsuk (Kangirsuk), Nunavik, QC, who worked primarily in sculpture to create humorous and unique work. Kudluk frequently included Inuktitut syllabics on his sculptures and drawings, often inscribing his chosen title on visible surfaces of the work. In other instances, Kudluk would use the syllabics to relate the story of what he had carved. Although he occasionally drew on oral history and contemporary traditional practices in his work, Kudluk’s primary thematic concern was with Inuit personal and social life. He was also one of the few Inuit artists to produce sexual carvings (mostly with a humorous twist) at a time when these depictions were considered taboo. Kudluk's work was first exhibited in 1973 at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in Manitoba, and the artist enjoyed his first solo show in 1979 at The Arctic Circle in Los Angeles, California, before going on to exhibit more broadly across North America and in Europe. His work can be found in the public collections of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, ON, the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto and the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, QC, among other major institutions across Canada. Thomassie Kudluk, Taleelayuk

Taleelayuk is the sea spirit who became the protector of all sea animals. She is a force to be reckoned with should anyone disrespect her creatures. The fluid nature of oral culture means details of certain legends also tend to be ever-evolving. Among the most famous of the vast array of oral storytelling traditions, are those related to the sea spirit known by different regions throughout northern Canada as Sedna, Nuliajuk, Takannaaluk, Arnajuinnaq, Uinigumasuittuq or in this case, Taleelayuk.
