Woman Scraping Kamik
Johnny Inukpuk, like Akeeaktashuk, began creating sculptures on an impressive scale as early as 1951. By the mid-1950s many of his larger works were typified by voluptuous, rounded volumes. This work dates from the 1960s, a decade in which Inukpuk produced perhaps his greatest work. His mostly female subjects, modelled on his wife, are notable for their unusually large heads and hands. They perform daily chores and tend to infants or young children with an unusual degree of concentration.
