Woman with Child Sewing Kamik
Woman with Child Sewing Kamik
This carving depicts a mother sewing a pair of kamiks, or skin boots. When Inuit girls are learning to make kamiks, it was often a time for elders to orally pass down traditions and rituals. The first pair of kamiks is seen as a bond between women and the traditional Inuit lifestyle. Women would make kamiks and clothes for their familiesfrom a variety of seal and caribou skins that provided maximum warmth and comfort.
