Kukshout, Pie

(1911–1980)

Pie Kukshout (1911–1980) was a sculptor and ceramicist from Kangiqliniq (Rankin Inlet), NU. A stone carver for most of his life, he began working with ceramics in his seventies when he joined the Rankin Inlet Ceramics Project as one of its first participants. Kukshout became known for his imaginative clay vessels incorporating imagery of human faces and animals as well as his sculptural approach to ceramics. His work has been featured in exhibitions across North America, and is housed in public collections such as the Winnipeg Art Gallery in Manitoba and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC.
