Muckpa, Qumangapik

(1939–?)

Qumangapik Muckpa was a carver from Ikpiarjuk (Arctic Bay), NU, the daughter of sculptor Elisapee Kanangnaq. Muckpa learned to carve as a way to keep from being idle, and preferred to carve soapstone, when it was available. Her favourite subjects to carve were narwhals and hunting scenes, although she is better known for her female figures today. Muckpa’s works are in the Twomey Collection of the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the Hudson Bay Permanent Collection of the Manitoba Museum.
