    Decorated Pot

Donat Anawak is from Rankin Inlet, the birthplace of Inuit ceramics. In the mid-1960s, the government funded a ceramics program in Rankin Inlet in an attempt to expand the Inuit arts and crafts economy. Ceramics is not a traditional Inuit medium. Along with helping the community’s economy, the program brought innovative imagery not previously seen in Inuit art. This work was created in 1966, at the height of the program. Many of the hand-built pots created in Rankin Inlet have relief sculptures of animals and heads, often overlapping to create curious compositions.
