Suqslak, Joseph

(b. 1958)

Joseph Suqslak (b. 1958) was born near Taloyoak and was adopted by his grandfather, Joata Suqslak, who was a noted carver with several pieces in the WAG collection. His brother, Moses Pameogarak, was also a carver. Joseph’s family moved into Taloyoak in 1970, and later moved to Gjoa Haven in 1979.

In the 1980s, Suqslak was a full-time employee of the Qikiqtaq Co-operative. He carved occasionally, but in 1988, he devoted himself more fully to carving. He has participated in several workshops organized by the Inuit Art Foundation, served as a Director on the Foundation Board, and was an organizing member of the Kinqunik Society of artists in Gjoa Haven. His work has been featured in group exhibitions in Toronto, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Santa Fe, Paris, and Verona. It was featured in the major WAG exhibition Art and Expression of the Netsilik in 1997-1998.

    About

    Nuliajuk’s Bird Husband

    Nuliajuk’s Bird Husband

The artist has described the subject of his carving: ‘This is from a story [about Nuliajuk] told by my grandfather [Joata Suqslak]. A young woman would not marry, but one day a handsome man appeared, and she finally said “yes.” He took her off to an island, where he began to mistreat her. She found out that he was a bird, a fulmar, or bird of the storm.’ Unexpectedly, Joseph Suqslak has chosen to depict not the sea spirit but her husband instead. He is shown in a state of transformation, between his human form and his true bird self.
